There is no denying that Finland knows a bit about what it truly means to be a “sniper.” World War II sniper Simo Häyhä earned the nickname “The White Death” for taking out more than 500 enemy soldiers. More recently, it was just last year that Finland won NATO’s European Best Sniper Team Competition!
The soldiers from the Scandinavian nation understand that while any weapon employed by a trained marksman could be considered a “sniper rifle,” a purpose-built rifle designed for snipers will truly give them an edge. And now Finland’s snipers could have a serious advantage.
At this week’s Eurosatory 2024 defense exhibition in Paris – the world’s largest military arms show – Sako presented its newly announced TRG 62 A1 ELR (extreme long-range rifle). Chambered for a 9.5x88mm cartridge that is based on the .375 CheyTac, it is an evolution from the Finnish military’s TRG 42, while it also incorporates elements of the TRG M10 multicaliber rifle.
Sako was quick to suggest it was developed to enhance the effectiveness of operators in any operation.
“Sako TRG 62 A1 was created for law enforcement and special operations teams, guaranteeing improved performance and operational efficacy. Potential clients include tactical units with specialized weapons needs for critical operations and defense forces looking to improve their marksmanship and sniper capabilities. Our dedication to quality and innovation makes this rifle a revolutionary weapon for modern warfare,” said Juuso Austin, business unit director at Sako.
It was designed to hit targets beyond 2,000 meters while delivering 25% more energy than traditional high-powered calibers, including .308 Winchester and .338 Lapua Magnum, while the Sako TRG 52 A1 weighs just 7 kg (15.4 pounds).
“This advanced weapon system represents a significant leap in design and engineering, providing unmatched accuracy, range, and reliability,” added Miikka Tamminen, Sako R&D director. “Our dedicated R&D team has meticulously crafted this marksman rifle to meet the evolving demands, ensuring superior performance in the field. This platform not only enhances the capabilities of long-range shooting but also sets a new standard for new doctrine of future marksmen.”
The TRG 62 A1 is equipped with a modified TRG M10 chassis, which has been strengthened and also fitted with a modified cheekpiece on the stock and folding adjustable buttpad. The rifle features a 305mm long M-LOK handguard and a 210mm long NATO accessory rail.
The rifle is fed from a seven-round, double-column, detachable box magazine. According to international military analyst firm Janes, at the Eurosatory show, Sako displayed the sniper rifle fitted with an Ase Utra SL11 suppressor.
Commercial availability of the rifle has yet to be announced.
