Springfield Armory Releases 1911 DS Prodigy Comp
Springfield Armory has expanded its line-up of 1911 semi-automatic pistols with its new double-stack Prodigy Comp models with 5-inch and 4.25-inch match-grade barrels. Each features a discreetly designed integral compensator to reduce felt recoil and muzzle rise while further combining the 1911’s most beloved characteristics with modern capacity.
The Prodigy Comp’s compensator is just a single port on the top of the hammer-forged slide and barrel, which redirects gas upwards, reducing muzzle rise and enhancing control, allowing for faster and more accurate follow-up shots. The new 1911 pistols are also fitted with a tritium front sight positioned behind the compensator to ensure an uninterrupted sight picture.
“The Prodigy pistol has proven to be very popular with shooters looking for the appeal of the classic 1911, but with enhanced double-stack magazine capacity and modern features,” explained Steve Kramer, Springfield Armory’s vice president of marketing. “The flat-shooting Prodigy Comp adds the benefit of reduced muzzle flip and faster follow-up shots to an already highly capable design.”
Most notably, the 9mm pistols are configured around a double-stack magazine, while the polymer grip module of the 1911 DS pistol mounts to a forged steel frame, offering capacities of 17+1 and 20+1. Each also features slides cut for AOS (Agency Optic System) plates, which were developed in collaboration with Agency Arms. The billet steel plates were meant to deliver proper optic height for an intuitive sight picture and instant target acquisition and feature an integral rear sight. The Prodigy Comp also ships with a HEX Dragonfly compatible plate as well as a cover plate. Additional optic-specific plates are available for purchase.
Key features of the Springfield Armory Prodigy Comp include an extended ambidextrous thumb safety, green fiber optic front sight and u-notch rear sight, Picatinny rail on the dust cover of the frame, skeletonized hammer, and forward slide serrations to allow for easy manipulation in adverse conditions.
