Springfield Armory might be best known for imported striker-fired XD and Echelon pistols. However, their facility in Geneseo, Illinois, has always bristled with the production of the firm’s famous M1A platform. The M1A, however, was joined by the next-generation bolt-action 2020 rifle—in 2020. The 2020 portfolio has expanded to include rimfire and centerfire sporting rifles, and new for 2024 is the 2020 Boundary.
The Boundary is a set of new rifles, one meant to be light, and one meant to be heavy, both chambered in serious long-range cartridges capable of taking big game. The Boundary Rifles feature an AG Sportsman carbon fiber stock backed by a 1-inch-thick Decelerator recoil pad, giving the best balance between lightening the platform with compensating the recoil that is the usual tradeoff. The stock has a 13.5-inch length of pull from butt to trigger, a good compromise fit for average and taller than average height shooters. The forend is equipped with two QD cups for mounting an appropriate bipod.
The Boundary uses the standard barreled action of the 2020 with a few added features. The Boundary uses a fluted bolt with dual forward locking lugs that ride in EDM rails for snag-free cycling. The bolt handle has a 90-degree bolt handle that doesn’t rub the shooter when carried across the back. The rifle has a fixed internal magazine paired with a Remington 700-compatible anodized aluminum floorplate. Unloading is as easy as pushing the lever in front of the trigger guard to open the plate and dump the rounds in the magazine without the need to cycle the action repeatedly. The Boundry features a TriggerTech Field trigger that is adjustable from 2.5 to 5 lbs for an effortless press.
The Springfield Armory 2020 Boundary comes with the choice of two barrel profiles: a heavier traditional free-floated fluted stainless steel barrel for a muzzle-heavy and steady hold or a lightweight BSF carbon fiber barrel to save ounces on hard treks. Both versions of the Boundary are chambered in short-action and long-action cartridges, including .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, .300 PRC, and .300 Win. Mag., 7mm Rem. Mag. or 7mm PRC. The Boundary rifle has a starting MSRP of $2,173 and, for a limited time, is part of the Gear Up with the Model 2020 promotion, which gives the buyer of a new 2020 model the option for a free Model 2020 Target rimfire rifle.
