Facebook Marketplace Meetup for $5k Bracelet Ends in Self-Defense Shooting

LEE COUNTY, FL — On June 15, 2024, at approximately 8:24 PM, deputies from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunfire involving a lifted Toyota pickup in the area of 4325 4th Street West. The incident stemmed from an attempted robbery during a Facebook Marketplace transaction and resulted in the arrest of 18-year-old Jaylon Shaw.

The victim, who was selling a $5,500 gold bracelet through Facebook Marketplace, had arranged to meet the buyer at the provided address. When the victim and his wife arrived, Shaw forcefully grabbed the bracelet, placing the victim in fear for his safety. In response, the victim fired his pistol in self-defense.

Shortly after, a 911 call reported that Jaylon Shaw had arrived at 205 Felix Avenue North with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. Shaw was transported to Gulf Coast Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, including a fractured scapula.

Detectives recovered four spent .380 caliber casings at the scene and found bullet defects in nearby garbage cans and well equipment. Security footage showed Shaw fleeing the scene as gunshots were heard. The victim’s Glock 42, used in the shooting, was recovered from his truck’s center console.

During an interview at the hospital, Shaw initially denied involvement but later confessed to planning the robbery with a friend’s assistance. He refused to identify his accomplice.

Shaw was arrested for robbery by sudden snatching. He has a prior history of offenses, including domestic violence and grand theft.

This incident underscores the importance of firearms for self-defense. It also highlights the dangers of private sales and the need for precautions when meeting strangers for transactions. Here are some tips to ensure safer private sales:

  1. Meet in a public, monitored location: Police stations and public areas with surveillance cameras provide safer environments.
  2. Authenticate identities: Verify the other party’s identity through state-issued identification.
  3. Buddy system: Bring a friend, especially another concealed carrier, for added safety.
  4. Carry concealed: Avoid displaying your firearm to prevent it from becoming a target for theft.
  5. Act decisively: If you decide to use your firearm, do so to defend your life. Avoid chasing suspects.
  6. Consider other options: Evaluate whether face-to-face transactions are necessary. Online platforms like Amazon or eBay might offer safer alternatives.
