Camden Man Shoots Attacker Armed with Hammer and Crowbar in Self-Defense Incident
CAMDEN, AR — On July 24, 2024, at approximately 12:51 a.m., officers from the Camden Police Department responded to a call regarding shots fired on Spring Street. Upon arrival, officers encountered a 25-year-old man walking toward the roadway with his hands raised. The man informed the officers that his firearm was placed on the trunk of his vehicle. Nearby, officers found a 36-year-old man lying on the ground, unresponsive.
The 36-year-old male, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, was quickly transported to the Ouachita County Medical Center. Unfortunately, he was later pronounced deceased. The younger man claimed self-defense, stating that the deceased had approached him aggressively wielding a hammer and pry bar.
Following the incident, the 25-year-old was taken into custody and transported to the Camden Police Department without any resistance. He remained cooperative throughout the investigation, providing detailed information about the events that transpired. He subsequently appeared for his First Judicial Appearance on the same day. The investigation remains ongoing.
This incident underscores the complex nature of self-defense situations. Even when a shooting appears to be justified, the person involved may still be taken into custody and face legal scrutiny. In such cases, having self-defense insurance can provide critical support, covering legal fees and offering guidance through the legal process. It’s a practical consideration for anyone who owns a firearm for personal protection, ensuring that they are prepared for all potential outcomes.
