Homeowner Fatally Shoots Intruder After Ignoring Warnings

HERRICK, IL — An early morning home invasion in rural Herrick, Illinois, turned fatal on Friday when a 19-year-old intruder, Wade M. Barnes of Cowden, was shot by a resident and later died, as reported by Shelby County Sheriff Brian McReynolds.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies received an emergency call at approximately 5:25 a.m. reporting a home invasion in progress. The suspect, Barnes, reportedly entered the residence and made threats toward the occupants. An individual within the home armed themselves and issued verbal commands for Barnes to stop. When the intruder ignored the warnings and continued advancing, the occupant fired at Barnes, striking him.

Emergency medical services arrived and transported Barnes to Good Shepherd Hospital in Shelbyville, where he was pronounced dead at 7:16 a.m.

Court records indicate that Barnes had prior interactions with law enforcement. On October 9, he was charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated fleeing from a police officer, possessing a firearm without a FOID card, transporting alcohol while underage, and property damage exceeding $300. Barnes was due for a court appearance on November 20 for these charges. Additionally, in May of 2023, he was charged with aggravated fleeing and excessive speeding; he was subsequently ordered to complete driver education and community service.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident, with assistance from the Illinois State Police, the Shelby County Coroner, and the Shelby County State’s Attorney.

Thankfully, the homeowner was armed and prepared to defend against an imminent threat. Despite seeing the homeowner’s firearm and hearing warnings to stop, the intruder continued advancing, indicating he posed a serious danger beyond burglary alone. This case highlights the critical role of responsible firearm ownership, allowing law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and others in their own homes from potentially violent threats. Understanding state self-defense laws is essential for those preparing to defend their households against similar situations.
