Homeowner Fatally Shoots Juvenile During Alleged Vehicle Break-In in Shreveport

SHREVEPORT, LA – A juvenile male was shot and killed late Saturday night while allegedly attempting to break into a vehicle in the 8900 block of Hawthorn Drive. The incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. on May 11, 2024, when the Shreveport Police Department (SPD) responded to a call regarding a vehicle burglary and subsequently learned that the homeowner had shot one of the suspects.

Upon arrival, officers and paramedics found the juvenile male with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the Caddo Parish Coroner was called in. According to Love Shreveport-Bossier, the homeowner reported that he saw multiple suspects breaking into his vehicle through his home security camera. The homeowner went outside to confront them, and when one of the suspects flashed something at him, he fired his handgun, striking the juvenile in the head.

The other suspects fled on foot in an unknown direction, and no arrests have been made at this time. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to gather more information about the incident and the identities of the remaining suspects.

The Dangers of Confronting Car Thieves

This event highlights the serious risks associated with confronting individuals engaged in criminal activities, particularly when leaving the safety of one’s home. The homeowner, despite being outnumbered and uncertain if the suspects were armed, chose to face the situation head-on. While the outcome was favorable for the homeowner this time, it could have easily ended disastrously had the suspects been armed and willing to shoot.

Homeowners are strongly advised to avoid direct confrontations with potential criminals. Instead, they should remain in their home and contact law enforcement to handle the situation. Engaging with suspects not only puts the homeowner at risk but also increases the likelihood of a violent encounter. There’s no need to put your life in danger over a vehicle that has insurance on it.
