Rochester Man Uses .45 to Stop Teens Attempting to Run Him Over w/ Stolen Cars, Injures 17-Year-Old

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A 46-year-old man in Rochester took decisive action to protect himself when a group of teenagers attempted to use their vehicles as weapons against him on Wednesday afternoon. The man, armed with a legally registered .45-caliber handgun, fired several rounds as the teens drove directly at him, striking one of the assailants.

According to local news media, the incident unfolded on Norton Village Lane when the man approached the teens, who were occupying a Kia and a Hyundai, to inquire about their presence in the area. After initially driving away, the teens circled back and allegedly aimed their vehicles at the man, a clear act of deadly force. In response, the man justifiably used his firearm to defend himself, wounding a 17-year-old in the process.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m., police were called to South Union Street, where they found the injured teen. He was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Investigations revealed that both vehicles were stolen, and a 15-year-old boy involved in the incident was arrested on charges including grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. He is being held at the Monroe County Children’s Detention Center.

As of now, no charges have been filed against the 46-year-old man. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with further information is encouraged to contact 911.

The Right to Defend Against Deadly Force

This incident highlights the critical importance of knowing when and how to legally defend yourself. When faced with an imminent threat of deadly force—such as a vehicle being used as a weapon—responding with proportional force is not only justified but necessary for survival. In this case, the man’s use of his .45-caliber handgun was an appropriate response to the life-threatening situation he faced. Understanding your local self-defense laws can ensure that when you act to protect yourself, you are fully within your rights.
