Springfield XD Mod.4 Review: Four Benjamins

September 14, 2026

The Springfield XD has spent two decades being the pistol nobody could kill and nobody called pretty. The Mod.4 finally fixes the second part, adds an optics cut, and does it at a list price of $399. Gun Digest's review asks the obvious question: what's the catch? Their answer is that there isn't one.

The short version

Gun Digest reviews the XD Mod.4 OSP, a 9mm striker-fired pistol that keeps the XD's internals and reputation for reliability while giving it a completely reworked slide. The old rail hump along the bottom edge is gone, the profile now looks like an XD-M, the cocking serrations are deep and straight, and the front of the slide is beveled for easier holstering. The frame carries over from the Mod.3 with its undercut trigger guard, subtle finger grooves and a three-slot rail. Sights are steel with a fiber-optic front. The slide is optics-ready under a cover plate, and it still runs every XD magazine ever made, with spares at $31. The reviewer's range results averaged 2.2 to 2.4 inches at 25 yards across four loads, and the verdict is a dependable, affordable pistol that is more utilitarian than exciting.

Key points

  • Specs: 9mm, 16+1, 4-inch barrel, 7.3 inches long, 27 ounces, Melonite finish, 4-pound 6-ounce trigger.
  • What's new: the slide, with an XD-M-style profile, straight aggressive serrations, a beveled front and an optics cut.
  • What carried over: the frame, grip texture, grip safety, striker and loaded-chamber indicators, and magazine compatibility.
  • Accuracy: 2.2 to 2.4-inch average groups at 25 yards; best group 1.8 inches with Black Hills Honey Badger.
  • Price: $399 MSRP; street price already lower.
  • Pros and cons, per the review: reliable, durable, sleeker, optics-ready and affordable, versus utilitarian with nothing exotic about it.

Bottom line

For a first pistol, a truck gun, or an entry into competition before you know which division you'll shoot, the reviewer's case is that four hundred dollars buys a gun with the same features as pistols costing twice as much. It won't be the one you show off, but it will be the one that works.
